  • Enjoying Freshwater Aquarium Fish

Here are some ideas on selecting freshwater aquarium fish.

When you visit your pet shop and are selecting your new freshwater tropical fish and have found the ones you'd like, and are ready to purchase, here are some things to consider: before buying, look at that the shop you're planning

to purchase from and determine if they seem to be caring for their fish properly. Tropical aquarium fish get quite stressed when they're moved around, and this makes them susceptible to disease. Any reputable shop will quarantine new arrivals for a couple of weeks following they delivery. It is a good idea to check out that the dealer has quarantine tanks set aside for this purpose. If they do not, ask what their policy is regarding new fish, or consider shopping somewhere else.

Secondly, verify the conditions within the tanks. If they seem dirty and uncared for, or you see a couple of dead fish in the tank, consider going elsewhere as the chances are that the fish you purchase from them will not live long.

When you are happy with the shop, watch carefully the fish which are caught for you. You would like to have healthy specimens, and this you are able to normally see at a glance. It is best if the topmost fin should is standing tall, along with the fish having an excellent shape. In other words, it should be nicely rounded underneath and not concave. Verify also that it swims straight and streamlined.

In case you are searching to breed your fish, examine that you know what sex the bass is, if that is possible. In livebearers, which are the easiest to breed, it's normally obvious by the dorsal fin, but egg-layers are not generally easy, and at times, depending on the species, they can be impossible to tell apart.

At this point the store with nearly certainly put the freshwater tropical fish in plastic bags that they will tie up tight with as much air as is possible in the bag. To make sure you give your fish the least amount of stress as possible, it's advisable to put the plastic bag within a thick paper bag, to keep the tropical fish in dark.

Now, get the fish home as gently and as quickly as you can, and float the plastic bags on the top of the aquarium for at least 20 minutes. This gives them a chance to relax and to match the water temperature in the bag to the aquarium water temperature. When the 20 minutes have expired, cut open the bag and release the fish. Do this slowly and carefully.

Finally, if you're aquarium is brand new, it's ok to release your fish straight in to it, otherwise use of a small quarantine tank for a couple of days in an effort to protect the other fish in your aquarium in the event of disease from the new fish.
