  • About Freshwater Puffer Fish

The pufferfish is really a unique species. Just by staring at a pufferfish, you are able to tell that it is no ordinary fish. Some have likened the puffer fish to underwater hamsters or even panda bears. Regardless of what you see when you look at pufferfish, you can't help but notice their expressive faces that at times even appear to be smiling (see picture at left).

The Pufferfish derives its name from its remarkable power to inflate itself by sucking in air or aquarium water. When a pufferfish feels threatened, it is tends to to puff up its elastic stomach until it looks practically spherical. The Pufferfish is for that reason also identified as Balloonfish, Swellfish, Blowfish and Globefish. The capacity to inflate itself is also discovered inside Porcupinefish, but unlike Pufferfish, the Porcupinefish is equipped with spines

Freshwater Puffers are happiest in a bigger tank. Even if are of the freshwater variety, some like a little salt introduced into the water. A large tank is great for other fish, simply because they will have a great deal of areas to hide from the Puffers four teeth.

If Puffers are in healthy, they can survive for many years. Plants may be in danger due to the fact most Puffers like to consume them. In an aquarium it would be advisable to have numerous caves, so they have areas to hide where they can’t see the others and everybody can have its own hiding place.

Be advised that each species may perhaps require unique water parameters and one can discover them by researching or asking a knowledgeble pet store. It is also crucial to realize that these species are incredibly sensitive to low pH levels. You can lose your Puffers quickly without proper water care.

They prefer to be fed frozen blood worms and freeze dried shrimps or krill, plus frozen and reside brine shrimp or Ghost Shrimp, and an occasional treat of living Black Worms. They have powerful teeth, which they use to crack open snail shells, and puffers love to eat tiny aquatic snails such as rams horn snails. If a Puffer Fish has a full belly nipping can be minimized\, so take care to keep them well fed.

Whenever you introduce a new Puffer into your aquarium, it will likely accept only a couple of foods instead of accepting the entire range. It is wise to ask the seller about food that have been fed in the shop. If you're very curious, ask a seller to feed chosen Puffers while still at the store to ensure that you'll be able to see what they like.
